The final concert at the North Adams former movie palace, the Mohawk Theater, was by Johnny Cash in February 1988. On Saturday, September 29, at 8 PM, the music and spirit of Johnny Cash return to Main Street after almost 25 years in a concert to raise funds for the reopening of the theater.
Supported by MCLA and presented by the city of North Adams with help from MASS MoCA, the celebrated Mohawk Theater opens for one night only with Harold Ford as Johnny Cash and Laura Lucy as June Carter Cash plus a full complement of musicians forming the Cash Band. In what is sure to become a historic Berkshire event Johnny and June’s greatest hits illuminate the downtown scene in a concert sponsored by Joe Low that benefits the Mohawk Theater Restoration Fund and the Williamstown Rural Lands Foundation.
The Mohawk Theater opened its doors on Main Street in North Adams in 1938, complete with a 25-foot proscenium stage, a balcony, and an art-deco interior with Native American motifs. The Mohawk showed first-run movies and traditional Sunday afternoon matinees on the theater’s single screen until 1987, when it became a venue for concerts and theater. Although the Mohawk closed its doors in 1991, it remains the last large-screen theater in north Berkshire County, and one of the few late art-deco theaters in the nation.
Harold Ford’s voice and physical resemblance to Johnny Cash are striking, making him a natural Johnny Cash tribute artist. Since childhood Ford has been surrounded by old American pioneer songs. At four he began singing duets and harmonies with his sister, Dorothy, accompanied by his father on the banjo and his mother on the piano. Paired with Laura Lucy as the spirit of June Carter Cash, he brings the harmonies of Johnny and June to life.
